That seemed like it was trying to create enough doubt to make the claim that Sirius was Solar Wing plausible, but I'll grant that it could be interpreted differently. Apollo only remembering her scent always seemed very Apollo to me, but the show seemed to be doing its best to keep the question up in the air past the point when it seemed obvious what was going on, so it seemed to fit in with everything else at the time, but again, I can grant that that could be interpreted differently.
What about when Rena sees Apollo become Apollonius in the second episode? The dialogue between Apollo and Silvia afterward could be explained away sort of (except that Seliane seemed to accept that at face value), but I'm not sure how to explain that transformation away.
What bugs me the most about it is how forced it seems. Sousei ended the story, we found out how all the reincarnations worked out, even all but explicitly stating that Fudo is Vector Mars's original pilot, and there's a slightly hopeful note that next time things will work out better. The twist at the end makes perfect sense too - you think back and remember when Toma used "Solar Wing" and when he used "Apollonius", and that line about "love is when you find a piece of your soul in someone else, but when you realize you can't have it it becomes hate" makes the Apollo X Silvia X Sirius dynamic take on a new meaning. Then Evol comes along and pulls out things that were so downplayed in Sousei that they barely existed, just for what seems like "we're in the home stretch and we need a twist, someone think of something". Fudo also seems like a dick for not just saying something and preventing the whole mess in the first place.
Basically, if it had been left more open-ended in Sousei I wouldn't be so angry with it, but I'm just left feeling like this was an asspull.
