[ He looks at the money before taking it to look at it a bit closer ]

[Next is a paperclip, a plastic card, and then a small device with buttons on it. That really captures his attention, and as he hits a number, the small black box lights up to display something of a small picture.]

Whoa! Bertholdt! Get a hold of this thing!

[Forget the coins, this is just... weird!]

[ he peers over marco's shoulder, looking at the device. ]

How did it do that?

[halftimesoldier]

Uh...

[He presses another button and the number 4 shows up.]

Wait, that's not it... [And then some more numbers. He experimentally presses another button and a small green icon shows up, followed by a voice. Slowly, he lifts the little device to his ear and frowns, trying to listen.]

Bertholdt... I think there's someone in here!

[perspire]

How can they fit in there?

[ just going to peer closer ]

I don't know... But- Oh! It got quiet.

[There is beeping, almost as though someone hung up. He tries again, this time adding more numbers before hitting the green button again. As it dials, he waits, then he hears a muffled ringing close by.]

Huh?

[perspire]

[ well now bert is going to dig through his own pockets and pulls out one of his own. ]

--I have one too.

[halftimesoldier]

Bertholdt, your name is on here. [He presses the green button once more.] Oh! It's ringing again.

[Marco puts the phone up to his ear again, wondering if he's going to hear Bert on it. Maybe it just like... records or something? He doesn't remember saying anything earlier before he first heard the voice in it.]

[perspire]

Huh, I won--

[ and before he can say anything else, his own starts ringing. he stares at it, seeing marco's across the screen. ] Mine's reading your name.

[ bertholdt looks at it for a second before pushing a button on the screen. the ringing stops. the call is connected and he holds it up to his ear ] I wonder what this does.

[halftimesoldier]

An echoe...? Oh! Wait a second!

[And Marco has to test this, because if what he is suspecting is true, this is amazing! He boldts away and stands behind a corner, glancing around it to wave at Bertholdt.]

Can you hear me, Bertholdt?

[perspire]

[ his eyes widen at the fact that he can still hear marco when he's out of normal hearing range. ]

Y-Yeah, yeah I can!

[halftimesoldier]

This is so cool! I wonder how far away I can be. Hang on, I'm going to walk further...

[And he starts heading down to where he can see more buildings.]

How is this even working? You can still hear me, right? Why don't you try to call me! Uh, I'm going to hit the red button so this will stop... like t-

[And he's hung up. Go Bertholdt! Go!]

[ OH YOU DID NOT JUST HANG UP ON ME i mean

bertholdt is still reeling from the fact that this device is able to allow them to talk. if the range of this is pretty good, then just think about how useful this can be back home. he looks at the screen and tries to figure out how to get marco's name back on the screen. it takes a bit of fiddling, but he manages it and calls marco ]

[halftimesoldier]

H-Hello?

[He answers, still excited, but sounding nervous. He doesn't want to be too excited if this is someone he doesn't know. Maybe it just says Bertholdt all the time no matter what he presses? This thing is definitely strange.]

[perspire]

Marco...?

Marco, the range on this thing is--! [ there's some definite excitement in his voice ]

[halftimesoldier]

Incredible! Good job!

[And he's jogging back, still holding the phone to his ear. He's getting strange looks as he passes by some people, but he's obviously thinking more about this discovery rather than those strangers. When Bertholdt comes back into view he hangs up and stop by him, grinning excitedly.]

[perspire]

[ He's waving at Marco as he jogs up, looking at the device, still can't really believing that it works ]

I wonder what else it can do!

[And he's pressing more buttons on it when a text message appears. He opens it and frowns. This isn't Bert. He tries to answer, and ultimately ends up sending a jumbled up keysmash at whoever sent him the question.]

I can send messages, too...

There seems to be no limit to what it can do.

Maybe it's just meant for communication? [He doesn't even know what a camera is, but maybe he'll try that out later.]

It's kind of amazing how far this place has gone, you know? We only just got here, but there's still a lot we don't even know...

I wonder if we'd even be able to understand a fraction of it.

[halftimesoldier]

We could! Well, I don't know how long we will be here, but I think I'm learning a lot already. It could be a lot of fun being here.

[And they've barely walked through one small district. There's clear excitement on his face.]
