[ in charge of giving away treats, she comes back to the table with a half-filled basket with every intention to refill it, who should she see but--

she bounces up behind him and practically shouts: ]

GAIUS! Hiya!

[cassonade]

[startled, gaius nearly jumps but manages to hit the table; it's only his hip that manages to collide with it, along with crushing a croissant that was in his pocket. half of it wilts and falls to the ground. he hisses, grasping his hip and turning around to meet that voice. he'd know it anywhere.]

Crivens, don't sneak up on me like that!

Oh, I surprised you! I surprised Gaius! [ she sounds way too gleeful ] Yay! That means my practising has paid off!

[ anyway: ] Have you tried that one? Try it!

[ spoilers: it's meatloaf (deer meat) looking like a small pastry. ]

[SIGH. woman, please.] You practice scaring people?

[he's looking pretty closely at that pastry. that's. a little shady.]

Why that one in particular? ...What is it?

You're learning how to make food? [he's eyeing that pastry again. now it's even more suspicious. he'll go ahead and pick it up, but he won't bite it just yet.]

It doesn't smell very sweet.

[ let her tell you about how she tried making a bonfire in the kitchen because what is a stove or how her stew became on fire one day. today is not the day though, however.

[he'd be kind of sort of really horrified about a kitchen being set on fire but then again he wouldn't know what a stove is either?? yeah, let's leave this for another day.

gaius is still looking at the thing strangely. he really shouldn't do this. he shouldn't. not until she answers his questions.

quietly, he raises the pie to his mouth and takes a small bite, though big enough to get into the meat.]
