[ "hopefully no one will catch him" i don't think so. Rei may be there for a particular cause (and one that should probably be a secret, at that), but Nagisa needs absolutely no reason whatsoever to frequent the children's aisle of pretty much any store. particularly when stuffed animals are involved. he may have approximately a hundred of every animal on earth, but that is no excuse not to have more.

the unfortunate part is that he spots Rei the second he turns the corner and immediately jumps back, pressing his back against the shelving. plotting—how best to greet Rei-chan in this vulnerable setting???

by tiptoeing as sneakily as he knows how up to where he is and then popping up at his side like a whack-a-mole, that's how. ]

Rei-chan! [ "BOO!" ] Whatcha doin'?

[That was not a most ungraceful and helpless yelp you just heard, not in the least!

Except it totally was.]

Nagisa-kun...! [He sounds annoyed (as per usual), and it's clear he's making an effort to keep his tone down. It's by sheer dumb luck that his glasses haven't been knocked off with the impact, though the basket of presents Rei had been carrying has met a far less fortunate fate.] Don't tackle my sides like that-- we could both have ended up with a broken rib or bone!

[He's still not telling Nagisa what he's doing, though. A secret is a secret!]

[ he reacts like he usually does—by laughing at his suffering, all sweet and innocent like he's not the cause. but he's at least nice enough to crouch down and pick up a couple of the things that fell, handing them back to Rei with complete confidence and not a single burning question about what they are or why he has them.

(it's because he already guessed.) ]

It looks like you're really splurging! Need any help?

[There's a long suffering sigh before taking the items Nagisa had picked up and putting them back in the basket. It was a little strange that he didn't keep pushing for answers, and the only reasonable explanation for that, Rei thinks, is that he has already figured it out by himself.]

Thank you, but this is something I need to do on my own.

[A pause. He knows Nagisa is going to insist on helping him out, anyway, so it's best to make some sort of amends.]

--well. For the most part, at least. [Meaning that he gets to stay while Rei picks out presents for everyone else, but once it's Nagisa's turn, the blondie better go make himself scarce-- he's absolutely not ruining the surprise!]

[rockhop]

[ delighted (and appeased, the threat of constantly hounding him until he gets his way abated for the time being), he beams, clapping his hands together and turning toward the shelf Rei had been having his soul sucked out of just a moment earlier. ]

You lucked out, Rei-chan! This area is my specialty!

[ hmmm. making a mental note, he needs to come back for that fat happy whale plush. ]

What were you looking at before, exactly...?

[beautifail]

Ah, these ones over here. [He points out to a shelf where a small assortment of stuffed sea animals are on display, and if his intentions hadn't been clear enough before, there was just no denying it now.]

They are the smallest I have found, but I'm not sure they are the right size just yet. And then there's the matter of realism to be factored in, as well; on that shelf over there-- [He motions towards his back and a little to the right, though his eyes haven't followed the general direction of his hand.] --there are some inspired by what is clearly a more comical style, whereas these don't seem as childish...

[This just in, Rei is giving way too much thought to a handful of plush toys. Nagisa, what have you done?]

[ Nagisa's eyes don't follow his hand, either. in fact, he's looking in totally random directions, moving up and down the aisle with a slight squint. ]

Huh, these are new.

[ and he thought he had this place memorized!!! after a moment he pauses, hands on his hips. ]

Well, they're stuffed animals! They're supposed to be childish! Who wants a serious, boring toy? Nobody!

[ standing in front of the sillier looking stuffed animals. ]

I mean, as long as they're not baby toys... but these are cute!

[ they're baby toys. ]

[And of course, Rei feels the need to point out what should be obvious. While sporting a very deadpan-like face.]

You do realize these are for babies, don't you? [Not that this is his area of expertise, of course, but if he squints, he's pretty sure he can read it on the label.]

[rockhop]

[ ............. ]

Well, they're still cute!

[ He plucks a chubby stuffed turtle from the shelf and gives it a squeeze—eliciting a squeak, much to his delight. ]

And they're squeaky, too! I bet they'd be great for someone with a dog. I don't think any of our friends do, though.

[ Officially confirming that he knows exactly why Rei's here, without directly saying so. ]

Nothing that squeaks. [He visibly frowns at the sound, though his tone is oddly composed as he picks up the stuffed turtle from Nagisa's hand and places it right back on the shelf.

And then there's a quick pause as he considers his options. He intended to keep this a secret but, well, since Nagisa has clearly figured it out anyway...]

... For Makoto-senpai, I was thinking a larger, softer plush toy might be the best fit. [There, a quiet admittance of his own.]

[rockhop]

[ He's making a mental note: come back for the squeaky turtle. And the fat happy whale. By the end of this, he's probably going to have quite the shopping list. For the time being, though, he allows the turtle to go back to the shelf without a fight and smiles indulgently at the divulging of the not-so-big secret. ]

Definitely! He's larger and softer, himself, so it only makes sense. [ thoughtful. ] What if it were functional, too? Like one of those stuffed animal beanbag chairs! Then he could have something cute and soft, and a new chair at the same time.

[This time, not only does that line between his eyebrows grow more visible with his frown, but Rei can also almost feel his left eye twitch a little at the suggestion. Honestly, he's still trying to wrap his mind around the idea of a bunch of near adult males playing with stuffed toys, but a beanbag chair sounded awfully childish.]

I do approve of added functionality, but I feel like his siblings might make more use out of a beanbag chair than Makoto-senpai, himself. [Said as he studies the assortment of toys available on the top shelf, tentatively reaching for a medium-sized orca plush.] Perhaps it could be used as an extra bed cushion...?

Hmmmm... it would be kinda lumpy to sleep on top of. But it might make a good pillow! Or maybe he could just cuddle it at night when he gets scared.

[ scared of what, who knows, but he would feel a lot better with a big squishy whale, so obviously, Makoto would too. ]
