[When given the chance, Rei peeks out at the screen to check his time; of course he remembers his records, even down to the milliseconds, and that's why he manages to offer a small smile in return.]

It's only a little over a second, and I haven't beaten my personal best, still. [He figured Makoto was being too kind earlier, but he certainly appreciates the encouragement.]

Regardless, even this small improvement is proof that I'll be able to catch up in no time! [He sounds a lot more confident when he speaks next-- because it's the sort of attitude that comes easily to him, but also because he genuinely feels like the best way to bring out his potential is to be a part of the team.]

Thank you, Makoto-senpai. By next time, I'll make sure to beat today's record!

[makoto nods in full-on agreement, holding the chronometer out of the way and offering a thoughtful glance at the time displayed on it.]

Hmm. It might just be that you need to adjust. --you know, having arrived recently and all.

[he offers, now, a hand to the younger swimmer. (of course he is being too kind but anything to not dissuade anyone's will to sport.) in any case, he doesn't meant to belittle nor pamper.]

I'll make sure to write this down on the chart so we can use this time as your starting point. Ah-- you could even ask Rin for advice on the matter. Your technique is pretty close to perfect so now it's a matter of improving the strength of your kick. I don't doubt you'll improve in no time!

[He takes up Makoto on his offer again to pull himself up, and there may be the tiniest hint of a blush creeping up on his cheeks-- really, he should be used to compliments (especially from Makoto, of all people) by now, but it does still warm him up to hear his efforts are paying off.

At his other suggestion, though, Rei pauses for a moment, toweling off his hair in the meantime as an excuse for his silence.]

Do you... really think that would be a good idea, though? Asking Rin-san for advice, I mean?

--yeah, why not?

[he smiles sheepishly, allowing the other room to dry himself up after his time in the pool. things were much better with rin now and makoto knew that the redhead feels nothing but grateful towards rei; all that previous contempt or whatever it had been no longer straining their relationship.]

[that being said, makoto wasn't really sure on what terms they were when one-on-one. he can only hope it's a comfortable atmosphere.]

He might be a little tough about it but I think he could give you some real good pointers. He's been pretty open about land training tips to us lately.

[Well, yes, the general atmosphere between them is nothing like it was on their first (real) encounter and all animosities had long since subsided. Still--]

I know, but nobody else in the team specializes in the butterfly stroke. This used to be Rin-san's place, after all...

[He's still getting his mind around that idea-- that his spot wasn't his alone, but something to be shared with Rin on some level. And while Rei, himself, doesn't mind it, he's not too sure Rin feels the same way. Albeit a friendly one, it's still a form of rivalry, isn't it?]

Besides, if I'm to be instructed by Rin-san, it will only be a matter of time until I inevitably surpass him-- and even if he makes that irritating face again, I will not concede defeat!

[He means the crying face, by the way. Not that he actually thinks Rin would cry over that, but it's all part of his tsundere charade.]

[makoto nods, in understanding.]

Yes, but regardless we're all a team here. It's not Iwatobi and Samezuka anymore--

[but he pauses, realising he might be pushing rei onto an issue that has more to consider than just a simple 'we're a team now'; a healthy rivalry, but with the undertone of both having the "same spot" in the team, surely making their need to prove their (individual) worth a priority.]

[so, he clears his throat.] Aah, well, by that I mean -- it wouldn't be too bad to help each other out. There's an Olympic swimmer here too, so you could ask her as well. She gives all of us tips from time to time.

[it definitely would be nice to have a real swimming coach around, to boost their morale and give them advice on their form! but here they would have to make due with what few resources they had at hand.]
