[Okay, he hadn't expected that hand on his shoulder. He flinches, suddenly standing tall-

-And a few of his flyers escape from his bag and flutter around in the stream of students.]

Oh- Oh no! [Thankfully the stream is trickling down, so Onoda can easily get to his knees and start gathering up the loose flyers.]

[saveshearts]

[Geez, it's like those flyers have a mind of their own. Seto chases down one that blew a little further down the hall, and returns it to him, though it's a little crumpled now.]

Sorry 'bout that! Didn't realize they could scatter so quickly. You okay?

[uphill]

[Onoda is a true anime kid, Seto. If papers don't go flying at inexplicable moments, it's not an anime.

But that was nice of him. With as many papers as he sees in his hands, Onoda seems a little shocked that he was helped, but he reaches for the crumpled paper with a few nods.]

Thank you. [He'll have to toss these few out, but he has plenty more. He meets Seto's eye.] You don't have to apologize! I should have gotten a bag that keeps the flyers safe inside, but I didn't have the funds...

[Onoda gets to his feet and offers the stranger his hand.] Um, thank you for your comment earlier! I hope the biking club gets more members soon, so that's good to hear.

[saveshearts]

[Fair enough. Seto doesn't have a ton of faith in Onoda's ability to pull him to his feet, judging by his small stature, but he takes his hand to be nice and stands up.] How many members d'you already have? Looks like you're the only one out recruiting today.

[uphill]

[A very wise decision.]

Ah, well... It's just me and Makishima-san for now. [;_; Embarrassing.] He's an upperclassman. He couldn't come out today, but we still need more members, so I figured I could still go out on my own and advertise. I still have high hopes, though!

[saveshearts]

Only two, huh? That's not that many... [He can see why Onoda would want to advertise, even if it seems like most of the students aren't that interested.] Hey, for today, maybe I can help you advertise!

[uphill]

[Way to rub it in, stranger )8 And while it sounds like this person probably isn't interested in joining, he is offering a helpful hand.]

I can't ask you to do that! It would be taking up your time, and I don't even know your name-! Thank you for offering, though! Thank you very much!

[saveshearts]

Ehh... I really don't mind, though. I don't have anything planned today.

[Since he's new, he hasn't had time to apply for a job anywhere, or indeed join any clubs of his own, although that's somewhat unlikely.]

Here, gimme some of the flyers. [He reaches out to take the stack of papers that were recently rescued from the floor.]

[uphill]

[Onoda just watches helplessly, caught between insisting again that he doesn't have to do this and graciously accepting this person's help. Seto can go ahead and take those, but-]

Wait! [Onoda waves his hands defensively before reaching into his bag and taking out a small stack of clean flyers.] I think people will want to look at them more if they're clean, right? And you shouldn't have to carry dirty ones either. [He offers the stack to Seto and reaches for the dirty stack. He's smiling a little!]

Thank you for wanting to help us. You're a really nice person!

[saveshearts]

Hey, now you're thinkin'! [He waits for the clean and uncrumpled flyers with a smile.]

Sounds to me like you usually have two people helping out, so it must be tough to be down to one today.

[uphill]

[Onoda happily takes the dirtied ones and folds them into his back pocket.] I'll make sure to recycle these when I get the chance!

[But ah, having people help out...] Actually, back at my school, the biking club didn't even have to advertise. People who were passionate about biking already wanted to join, and the training the captain puts you in is rigorous, but it's a lot of fun too! It's worth it in the end.

Here... I guess no one thought much about starting a biking club, so we decided to start one. Biking is fun, but it's better when you have friends to do it with.

[saveshearts]

Woah, sounds like fun!

[Seto takes a quick second to hand one of the passing students one of the non-crumpled biking club flyers before turning his attention back to Onoda.]

But maybe this can be exciting too, right? From here, there's nowhere to go but up!

[uphill]

[Onoda doesn't shirk his duties for conversation either! As students pass, he offers the flyers and continues with his verbal encouragement for them to join.

And, WELL, that was definitely a reminder that the club is in the pits right now. But it's not like Seto is wrong? Onoda passes on a smile to him, nodding.]

Yeah! It can only get better from here on out.

[Oh! And when they have a moment, he turns to meet the stranger, giving a polite bow.] By the way, my name is Sakamichi Onoda!

[saveshearts]

Oh, that's right! I'm Seto.

[He'd shake his hand or something, but both of them are occupied with the flyers. He makes do by stuffing his stack under his elbow for a second to thump Onoda on the back by way of greeting.] Good to meet ya!

[Then it's back to passing out flyers. Not that they're having much luck.] Huh... Everyone seems to be kinda too busy to take one.

[Thankfully Onoda's got a good grip on his flyers! He might have flinched a bit in his surprise, but that sort of back-patting reminds him of a few people back home. He looks back to Seto and gives a smile, nodding. He seems considerably more comfortable than he was at their initial meeting.] It's good to meet you too!

[But yeah, not much luck. Not that he'd expected much, but at least he made a friend? When the courtyard seems relatively cleared out, Onoda places his flyer back into his pile and gives a small sigh through his nose, though he still manages a smile. He pushes his stack back into the one in his bag and approaches Seto again, his hands extended.]

That's alright. Thank you for your help today, Seto-san.

Not at all!

[saveshearts]

[Seto managed to get rid of a few flyers at least, using the tried and true method of forcing them into the hands of anyone who so much as made eye contact with him. Otherwise...not much luck.]

Hey, you're welcome! Ah... I guess you could say you'll have a lot to start from the next time you advertise? [Even for him it's a little hard to put a positive spin on this.] Here ya go, you'll probably be wanting these back.

[uphill]

[Onoda isn't giving up that easily anyway! He gives him a nod and a bright smile.]

Right! Besides, I haven't hung these up in the school bulletin boards yet. I can do that tomorrow!

[He replaces Seto's stack with the other ones. But before they really get to say their goodbyes...] Seto-san, what grade are you in?

[saveshearts]

[That takes him a second. The numbering system is different here, anyway.] Eleventh, I think. Why d'you ask?

[uphill]

Ah, I see! I'm in... tenth? I think. So I suppose we wouldn't have any classes together... [He's not used to the grading system either. Watch him struggle and try to keep up conversation. He's trying so hard, and making friends in the bicycle club has helped him out of his shell a bit, but it's still difficult for him to make eye contact or speak without stumbling over his words.]

But, um, maybe I'll still see you in school sometimes? Since I'm new here, I don't know a lot of people aside from Makishima-san, and so I was hoping you and I, even if you're not in the bicycling club...? Maybe we could be friends? Is that weird to ask someone directly?

[saveshearts]

[On the contrary, at the mention of 'friends', Seto's eyes light up.]

Then it's decided! You and me are friends starting right now. [He's not so easy to get rid of, anyway.] Besides, just 'cause we're in different grades doesn't mean we won't see each other. We can eat lunch together or something. [Is that allowed? Heck if he knows.]

[He turns towards the school gates, but doesn't walk away quite yet.] Where d'you live? Might as well walk together.

[uphill]

[He agreed to it! A nice stranger agreed to be friends! ;_; Onoda is leveling up!! Once that happy shock wears off, he brightens like a Christmas tree. A tiny and messy-haired one, hunched into his shoulders but smiling.]

Yes! [...Even though Seto didn't even ask him a question. His cheeks burn a little] I mean, yeah, we should! I live in house number [insert here]!

[Shyly but happily, he'll take to Seto's side, readjusting his messenger bag straps and the cloth bag holding his flyers.] That isn't too far from where you live, is it?

[saveshearts]

Not at all!

[Well, he doesn't see how it could be. It's pretty exciting to think about how many new neighbors there are to meet and befriend now.]

You said you're new around here, right? Me too, actually.

[uphill]

You too? [He sets off beside him toward the residential gate.] Where are you from?

[He's heard plenty of interesting answers since he's arrived--people from countries and planets he's never heard of, people that are countries, people from the past, others from the future--hopefully asking where Seto is from isn't too broad of a question!]

[saveshearts]

[Unfortunately, Seto's not really one of those exciting ones. He laughs, knowing exactly why Onoda asks; He's met some interesting folks too so far!]

Kashiwa, Japan, so all this is a bit of a shock. How 'bout you?

[uphill]

[He doesn't need to be! Onoda himself isn't exciting at all; in fact, he's a little more excited to find someone ordinary.]

You're from Kashiwa? My high school is in Chiba too! Seto-kun, do you ever visit Akihabara?
