the latest possible test drive

[ For all of Kazuya Miyuki's faults - and, according to everyone who has ever known him, there are a number of them - his cooking ability has never been on the list. In fact, he's been cooking kind of obsessively for a day and a half? There is so much fried rice in the house right now. He'd never admit he's using it as a distraction from how weird all of this is, but it's probably obvious.

At least the whole place smells good? The moment he spots someone else near the kitchen, he waves them down with the big metal spoon in his right hand. ]

Can you watch this for a sec?

[ He gestures to the cutting board on the counter. ] Or you can cut vegetables, I guess, but this is probably easier.

[ Is that a wink-wink-nudge-nudge you're terrible at cutting vegetables? Yes. Yes it is. ]

[ The neighborhood, at least, is nice. Kazuya would be doing more running or swinging his bat, but all of that got boring without anyone else to needle with teasing suffer with talk to, even for him. He's already swung a bat for hours today, he's already taken two long runs around the neighborhood, and he's been banned from the kitchen until the leftovers are gone. So now he's at the pet store, peering at the glass case. (Look, he's got a yappy first year at his heels all the time - of course he's a cat person.)

He reaches down to pet one particularly friendly kitten, but this is quite clearly a miscalculation: no sooner is his arm in the case than there is a mass of meowing fluff trying to climb his shirtsleeve. He looks around, clearly panicking a little. ]

That's my arm, c'mon -- [ He's working carefully to peel himself out, but at least one kitten had gotten up to his elbow and used it as diving board to get on the floor, so even when he eventually succeeds there's a second problem to address, here. ] Wai--get back here!

[ Save him.

[ Kazuya's spine stiffens at the first syllable out of Sawamura's mouth. It's nice to hear a familiar voice (even this one) but could this timing be much worse? ]

Are you saying you dream about me, Sawamura?

[ Gotta get the upper hand, early, or he'll never live this down. ]

[ So technically Miyuki is still there. But in a dream with the whoooooleee team Miyuki will unfortunately be there. :'( Maybe he can focus on replacing you with Chris-senpai...? ]

[ He raises his eyebrows. Obnoxiously, he muses out loud: ] So you admit to dreaming about me, huh... should I be flattered?

[ By now, he's successfully rescued his arm from the kittens. Next is the one attacking his shoelace, who gets picked up surprisingly carefully and held to his shoulder for a minute. ]

...wait, why would I be defeated if you became the ace? [ Sawamura's mind remains a mystery, as always. ]

BECAUSE, okay?! Besides you're getting eaten by those kittens, hah! You're definitely being defeated right now!!

[pickoffs]

[ Ah. Crap. ] I'm just irresistible, Sawamura, no reason to be jealous~

[ He puts the kitten down in the case, and frowns, turning to look around the store. Where did the other one go? ] Have you figured out I'm not a dream yet, so you can help me find the other one?

What do you want with them anyway? Let kittens be kittens! Don't bully them, Miyuki!

[pickoffs]

[ He rolls his eyes. ] Weren't they just eating me?

They escaped from the case, Sawamura, I'm returning them. So they don't get lost and go swimming in the aquariums.

[Obviously if there's one thing that's going to make this even less weird than cooking, it's cooking for the bottomless pit that is your ace pitcher. Furuya's not entirely sure how he got roped into helping with this just by walking by, but suddenly there's a utensil in his hand and he's gently stirring... is it mapo tofu? Chahan? No? Why not?

It better not be something Eijun likes.]

I shouldn't cut anyway, I could hurt my fingers.

[Could, more like would, but that's beside the point.] What're you making, senpai?

he's not even old enough for a parent slot but he has these 5 yr old kids

[pickoffs]

[ How he'd failed to notice he was handing the spoon off to Furuya was anyone's guess. Chalk it up to the aforementioned cooking as distraction thing. Immediately, his tone gets bossy: ] Yeah, you keep over there. And don't put your hands near the pan!

[ The knife is already in his hand when he looks up. ] That's half-cooked nikujaga, and this - [ He points to the stack of carrots he's about to get to- ] is for curry.

[staminaroll]

[It's not hard, Furuya's stealthy in that way people who never talk have, even if he is six feet tall and growing. He looks between Miyuki and the pot--it doesn't look dangerous--but he does as he's told. Somehow, the dodge to avoid work still turned into work.]

Nikujaga and curry...? [A closer look. There's a lot of meat in there. Living in the West might have its perks.] Are people coming over?

[pickoffs]

[ To be honest, he normally wouldn't bother with a warning as obvious as 'don't touch the hot pan I'm cooking in', even for Furuya, but the first years have repeatedly proved themselves remarkably capable of incredible ridiculousness. It can't hurt.

He makes a face. ] Nah. The curry's getting frozen for later, so I don't have to cook it every time somebody wants some. [ The knife slices through a carrot with a dull thunk, and then again. His eyes don't move up from the cutting board when he starts talking again. It's harder to catch if you cut off a finger, obviously. ] Nikujaga's better day-after, though, so it's going in the fridge for lunch tomorrow. [ Complete with a really big and official-looking post-it reading DON'T EAT THIS. ]

[staminaroll]

[Maybe he just wants to see how... yeah no, he'd have no excuse for touching the pan, but that'd be just as bad for his hands as cutting! No excuse.]

Are you cooking for the entire neighborhood? [It's not an antagonistic question, it's just that that's a lot of carrots. Maybe they're not coming over, maybe Miyuki-senpai's going visiting.]

If you have the curry, why make the nikujaga too? Just have curry for lunch. [He's still stirring but he's also watching you, senpai >.o]
